History
The AMC Theatre network began with a single theatre, the Regent Theatre in Kansas City, Missouri, which was acquired by Maurice, Edward, & Barney Dubinsky in 1920. Durwood Theatres was formed when the trio decided to change their name to Durwood.
The corporation has gone through various ownership changes as well as theatre dispositions and acquisitions throughout the years. AMC Theatres became the world’s largest movie chain after purchasing UCI Cinemas, Odeon Cinemas, and Carmike Cinemas in 2016.
Different Brands, Same Company
The majority of cinemas are run under the AMC name, which also applies to theatres bought by the corporation. The AMC brand is divided into three sub-brands, namely:
AMC Theatres
This is the primary brand utilized at the majority of the company’s locations. The theatres often have premium amenities such as reserved seating, reclining chairs, and big format auditoriums, despite slight architectural variances (e.g., IMAX). The MacGuffins Bars and snack stalls with somewhat imaginative menus are also available in these cinemas. The MacGuffins Bars serve alcoholic drinks that may be consumed in the lounge area or within the theatre, as well as a variety of meals; in the case of certain AMC Dine-in locations, the MacGuffins Bars are full-service restaurants where customers can dine without purchasing movie tickets.
The “AMC Amazing” motto and the corporate logo are also used by AMC Theaters.
AMC Classic
This is the secondary brand since it is used in smaller markets with reduced visitation, earning it the moniker “bargain theatre.” The majority of the sites have an annual refillable corn bucket program for their loyal customers. MacGuffins Bars and Dolby Cinema features are offered in some locations, which aren’t generally seen in AMC Classic theatres.
AMC Dine-in Theaters
This business goes by a variety of names, including Cinema Suites, Fork and Screen, and Red Kitchen, but they all provide the same amenities as a full-service restaurant, with alcoholic beverages and entire meals available to order and enjoy inside the theatre. Patrons can book a seat online (reserved seating) and request waiter service using the seat’s built-in button. Food and beverages can be ordered, however, there is no table service at certain locations labeled as Dine-in Express Pick-up.
In its own right, AMC Theatres is a trailblazer. Many of its theatres were among the first to provide stadium-style seating, which places seats on risers and allows customers to see the screen without being blocked. The chairs also feature adjustable armrests, allowing them to be converted into love seats. Both stadium seating & adjustable armrests were groundbreaking at the time and have now become commonplace in large movie houses.
